The Department of State requires U.S. employees who spend 30 days or more cumulative per year on foreign travel have personal security training. This includes Civil Service and Contractor employees. Employees on PCS orders who have not had the training are required to do so before returning to post. Course certification is good for 5 years and is required on country clearance form and waivers available from foreign Embassies, but only under extreme circumstances. This course is also suggested for family members over 18. The Department of State also recommends a 6 hour online course “Introduction to working in an Embassy.”
