NextGen NASA Workforce
On April 15, 2008, representatives of the next generation workforce community attended the NASA Strategic Management Council (SMC) at Stennis Space Center to discuss strategic workforce issues. Their attendance was the result of the Administrator’s strategy discussion at the March SMC at which the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Human Capital Management was asked to bring together a group of next generation civil servants to foster a discussion of issues concerning NASA’s younger workforce.

The April SMC discussion focused on long-term strategic effects of current hiring practices and the upcoming gap in US human space flight on the NASA mission and specific actions that the SMC and next generation community could each take. The following presentation (view briefing) was presented by the group as an introduction to the discussion and was intended to stimulate a discussion at the April SMC. After a brief introduction by the Assistant Administrator of the Office of Human Capital Management, this was presented over the next 10 minutes, after which a very productive discussion was held over the next 75 minutes.

The next generation community asked to create an environment where all NASA employees can leverage their strengths to push the limits of science and space exploration by:
  • Providing the current NASA workforce with infusion of fresh ideas, methodologies and technologies.
  • Providing the Next Gen NASA workforce the opportunities to gain needed experience today that it will need to become the Agency’s leaders in the future.
  • Enabling enhanced communication and collaboration between NASA centers and across generations.
  • Getting more young people in the door.
The NextGen team that presented to the SMC also spoke with the NASA Advisory Council (NAC) Committee on Human Capital on April 16, 2008, also at Stennis Space Center. The NAC discussion was paired with a discussion of Shuttle transition. It focused on the ability of NASA and its contractors to carry out their mission in the decade after transition.
